Welcome back, Chris de Burgh. In 2007, the Irish songwriter was one of the first artists to appear at the then-young Zermatt Unplugged. Storytelling is the hallmark of this full-blooded musician, who has been remarkably successful over three decades as the world’s greatest exporter of soulful ballads. He has sold around 50 million albums, receiving more than 200 gold and platinum awards for songs such as Lady in Red, High on Emotion or Don't Pay the Ferryman. As a live musician, Chris de Burgh is a charismatic artist, and is already a legend completely untouched by any scandal.

A small town in the heart of Scotland is the home of Amy Macdonald, who is probably the most gifted and successful singer-songwriter of recent years. At the age of only 24, she was playing on stages around the world following the success of her This is the Life and A Curious Thing albums. Although she has long become a start in her own right, she is still averse to her fame and the hype about her appearance. So instead of rolling out the red carpet, we will be welcoming Amy Macdonald with warm Swiss hospitality. Zermatt Unplugged is very pleased to welcome this unpretentious and vibrant artist.

A goddess is back, and Zermatt Unplugged is proud to make her welcome again: Ms. Lauryn Hill. She won no less than five Grammy’s with her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and is regarded as being the greatest R&B act since Michael Jackson. Highly talented and socially engaged from her earliest youth, self-love and trust in God are the strong messages from the hip-hop queen from New York. Ms. Lauryn Hill has already rapped unplugged and with an acoustic guitar on her MTV Unplugged 2.0 album, and appears in a classical formation with band and background singers. Ms. Hill, Doo Wop (That Thing).

For the first time in the history of Zermatt Unplugged, a French singer-songwriter is appearing on the big stage at the festival. Grégoire is a phenomenon, whose fans have made him into a star. More than 400 producers financed his debut album Toi + Moi in 2008, which quickly rose to the top of the French album charts. After a number of hits such as Danse, Soleil or Ta Main, there is no longer any trace of his initial reserve. Grégoire continues to feed the enthusiasm of his huge fan base with haunting and almost naively beautiful melodies.

Aloe Blacc is the new incarnation of Soul: a truly musical universe. After becoming known with the song I Need a Dollar, it took the mainstream to make his immense political message acceptable in America. For this son of Panamanian immigrants, Soul means the integration of influences such as Salsa, Calypso, Bossa Nova or Roots Reggae and breaking away from the classical instrumentation. On the Marquee Stage of Zermatt Unplugged, he sings songs from his successful Good Times album and takes us with him on a journey to the godfathers of his world.

The volcanic eruption that crippled international air traffic in April 2010 also prevented Newton Faulkner from travelling to Zermatt Unplugged. The concert had been sold out well in advance, making the disappointment of his fans even greater. But Newton is coming at last. We look forward to seeing the British musician, this obsessive global traveller who is intent on sharing his songs with the public. A rhythmic, percussive guitar style and a relaxed scat style of singing are his trademarks.

Art-Pop with poetic texts: this is how Clueso describes his style, or, even better: Clueso Style. Because in which drawer are you going to try to place this musician, who lives in a completely different world with every song? You come closest to this Erfurt artist when he appears with the Bernewitz Trio. A lot is improvised, and something new is continually created. In the meantime, Clueso, who has now released his fifth album, fills entire halls and, in between, appears spontaneously in cafés with just a single musician, just like that. Every one of his songs is something unique.

With A Solitary Man, Jonathan Jeremiah has produced an impressive debut album. The songs of the British singer-songwriter sound like eternity. The orchestral touch of the music follows the urgent, sonorous baritone and the guitar of the artist, who worked as a security guard at the London Wembley Arena for seven years in order to be able to finance his own first production. With roots in British folk and soul, Jonathan Jeremiah makes music that is close to the heart, close to home.

Melodies to sing along to, a clear, powerful voice and stories drawn out like a colourful string of glass beads: that is the music of Brooke Fraser. Brooke Fraser, the Kiwi Nora Jones, has been the darling of her countrymen since she was 17 years old, and conquered America and Europe with her third album Flags and the hit Something in the Water.

On Saturday night, the venerable Vernissage once again plays its originally intended role: as a singer-songwriter stage, with the piano playing of Peter Cincotti leading the way. Influenced by the various genres in his home town of New York, Manhattan, it’s the classically beautiful ballads and a casual sound between jazz and rock that makes Cincotti so fascinating. Intentional or not: The grandson of Italian and French immigrants has been particularly successful in Europe. Cincotti achieved his greatest success in Switzerland, Italy and France with the song Goodbye Philadelphia from his successful album East of Angel Town.

There is an eerie beauty in what the singer Anna Aaron sends out to her listeners. With her highly acclaimed second album Dogs in Spirit, the singer from Basle is well on her way to an international career, and is already a very welcome guest at festivals throughout Europe. She was the celebrated act on the Award Night at the Zurich Film Festival, and, at Zermatt Unplugged, she will have the honour of being the very first female artist to perform at the Sunnegga Sessions. Anna Aaron’s art oscillates between folk-rock and melodic pop rock. A sense of harshness and a deceptive world of dreams flow from even from her quietest ballads.

James Vincent McMorrow is the name of the Irish singer-songwriter with the unmistakable voice. He’s been on tour for months in Great Britain, and his concerts have been sold out everywhere. His debut album "Early in the Morning" achieved gold status in his native country. There, in a house on a lake, McMorrow writes songs of ravishing beauty. Inspired by authors such as John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Roald Dahl, they explore the dark side of life.

The connection between Zermatt Unplugged and James Walsh is based on real friendship. In 2007, the musician appeared here as the lead singer of the Britpop Band Starsailor. Walsh is the perfect musician for somewhat different stage situations, and is the archetype of the unplugged artist.

Like lunatics "on the road", that is the Lower Bavarian band Kellner. Born from a pop music Ich-AG, the Kellner star has been shining in the music heaven since 2009, and points south. On their Unplugged-Tour The Road Sessions, Kellner will be honouring us in our high-mountain cul-de-sac, and promise a solid show.www.kellner-music.de
