Roger Hodgson
Breakfast in America, Give a Little Bit, The Logical Song, It's Raining Again, Dreamer. These are songs that have become part of the history of pop music. Roger Hodgson, formerly of Supertramp, is the gifted composer and performer of these and many other classics, and is regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of our time. He will be appearing at Zermatt Unplugged with the saxophonist Aaron McDonald, and will play a mixture of old hits and songs from his solo albums that have appeared since 1983. His distinctive voice, says the Evening Standard, would sound stronger today than on the earlier recordings.

Is it any surprise that his albums always appear in the cold season? Seal, three-time Grammy winner for the Batman song Kiss from a Rose and multiple Brit Award prize-winner, breathes Soul and lives Pop. For two decades, the fans have adored this British singer with Nigerian-Brazilian roots, with his penetratingly positive lyrics and his velvety baritone. “Without exception, everything in my life has involved dedication“, says Seal, who has just published his sixth album Commitment, and has again appeared in the charts with the song Secret. Successful all over the world, this charismatic artist is especially revered by the Swiss. In no other country in the world are the songs of Seal so warmly appreciated.

Zermatt Unplugged is very pleased to welcome the British songwriter David Gray. Since 2005, his songs have been heard all over Europe: The One I love, Babylon, Fugitive. Three number one albums in Great Britain, including the most-bought album ever in Ireland, White Ladder, one of the great album successes of the new millennium. He produced it himself, with the simplest of means, on the edge of his bed in his bedroom in London. David Gray goes even further with his new album Foundling: “I have left so much behind me from the way you usually produce. I believe that, in the end, you become braver and progress further by quite simply leaving things out and doing less.”

Their songs are of a simple beauty, and their cinematographic touch accentuates the feelings of a complete generation. OneRepublic reached the Number One spot in 16 countries in 2007 with their global hit Apologize. The single went gold almost everywhere. Timbaland acted as a success accelerator – with the original on Myspace already having broken all records. The band from the Rocky Mountains is on tour with their second album, Waking up, and is looking forward to the concert in the Valais Alps, because they feel at home in the mountains. For one evening, Zermatt will sound like Denver, the home town of the band, the mile-high city. Great cinema a mile above sea level.

A garage, a hotel room, a living room and a loft: They’ve always wanted to play on a set like this, "great to sit on the floor, candles here and there, and so on," explained Mando Diao singer Gustav Norén in the laut.de interview for their MTV Unplugged appearance in September 2010. Together with the show, their latest acoustic album Above and Beyond was a turning point in the career of this Swedish band, well known for their full-bodied rock and roll attitude. Mando Diao are ripe for Zermatt Unplugged. Gustav, Björn, Carl-Johan, Samuel and Mats: We’ll make it comfortable for you! But we may have some problems with the garage!

New York 1999. After winning three “a cappella” competitions, the seven men found their very own style: Vocal Play. Naturally 7 consist of trumpet, guitar, harmonica, percussion and vocals. With unbelievable musicality and the virtuosity of their voices, they incorporate Rhythm & Blues. More than a million concert visitors saw Naturally 7 as a special guest of Michael Bublé, and every concert ended with standing ovations. Quincy Jones loves them, and Sarah Connor as well. They recorded Music is the Key with Naturally 7 in 2003. The result: Positions 1 and 2 in the German and Swiss single charts. Why unplugged, when it can also be done without any instruments at all?

Pirate Jenny in the Zurich Schauspielhaus, “Mrs. Death” and musical director for Sibylle Berg’s “Helges Leben”, Annie, Swiss Sister, runaway or just simply: Sina. The most exciting female export from Valais with a musical CV that could make you dizzy: from Cross-over with the Zurich Symphony Orchestra up to Sina featuring a Chinese Underground band. Whatever she does: Sina is brilliant. Above all as a Swiss dialect singer. She has been on the road in Helvetia with her band for 15 years, and has published no less than eight Pop-rock albums, receiving seven gold and two platinum awards for them. Her new single, Ich schwöru, after the album of the same name, goes on the air in 2011.

A velvety groove from Bossa Nova, samba, R&B and soul, sometimes easy and beautiful, and then melancholic and resonant: these are the songs from Marc Sway, the Zurich musician with Brazilian roots. The artists switches effortlessly between English, Portuguese and Swiss dialect. Ever since Hemmigslos liebe, a duet with Fabienne Louves, Sway has conquered the hearts of the Swiss people and, with his guitar long jump onto the stage of the Swiss Music Awards 2010, with which he saved the show, he has become the darling of the media. For the Tuesday Songs album, Marc Sway has done without technical refinements and simply went into the studio together with his band, just like in the Motown days. That does something for the soul. And, after that, there is only unplugged.

The Bernsteinbar, the Hafenbahnhof Cafe, the Freundenhaus and from there to the Vernissage. The British songwriter Duncan Townsend has found the greatest inspiration of his life so far in St. Pauli, the red-light area of Hamburg, with its many clubs and bars. He was discovered by Nena in 2006, who sang Caravan of Love with him, and he became well known as the support act of Katie Melua, Thomas Godoj and Xavier Naidoo. Skiffle, beat, soul – Townsend’s song writing is influenced by musical role models such as John Lennon, Nick Drake or Paul Weller. Now living in Hamburg, Townsend, who is often compared with the young Bob Dylan, released his second album in spring.

Martin Jondo brings Saturday Night Fever onto the set. Always in touch with the spirituality of Roots Reggae, this Berlin-born half-Korean succeeds in fusing together the lifestyle and content of the Rastafarian movement into stylish, but unerring successful pop songs. He is a popular support act for Gentleman, Erykah Badu and Raphael Saadiq, and his 2009 acoustic tours were a huge success. On his second album, Pure, adopts Jondo a reduced format: one acoustic guitar and a voice. The new Sky Rider album offers a danceable piece of art. Perfect vibes for an Unplugged club stage such as the Vernissage.

Steff la Cheffe – In the "DRS 3 Best Talent" final, the 23-year old beatbox vice-world champion from Bern won out against Alvin Zealot and Monotales, and picked up the Swiss Music Award in the category "Best Talent National". Bastian Baker, born in Lausanne on 20 May 1991, is an other example of the rich and diverse Swiss music scene. Songwriter, composer and performer, he has a strong inclination for "songs you can play around a fire with your friends on a summer's evening". He released his first single 'lucky' last month and is already playing on twelve Swiss radio stations. He is definitely an artist you should not miss when he plays at the Montreux Jazz Boat at Zermatt Unplugged 2011.
